Cinema Line experience without the full-frame price tag.

Cinema Line experience without the full-frame price tag.

by Sony
Ref # ILME-FX30B

The Sony FX30 (ILME-FX30) is a powerhouse for creators who want the "Cinema Line" experience without the full-frame price tag. It’s essentially the younger sibling to the FX3, packing professional filmmaking tools into a compact, Super 35 (APS-C) body.

Key Video Specs

The FX30 is built for a "video-first" workflow, prioritizing thermal management and post-production flexibility.

  • Sensor: 26.1MP APS-C (Super 35) CMOS sensor.
  • Resolution: Oversampled 4K (from 6K) up to 60p; 4K at 120p (with a 1.6x crop).
  • Color Science: Includes S-Cinetone for beautiful skin tones straight out of camera and S-Log3 for maximum dynamic range.
  • Bit Depth: 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording for serious color grading.
  • Dual Base ISO: 800 and 2500, which helps keep footage clean in low-light situations.

Build & Ergonomics

Unlike hybrid cameras (like the A7 IV), the FX30 is designed specifically for rigging.

  • Cage-Free Design: The body features five 1/4-20 UNC threaded mounting points, allowing you to bolt accessories (monitors, mics, handles) directly to the camera.
  • Active Cooling: It has an internal fan, meaning you can record long takes in 4K without worrying about overheating.
  • Tally Lights: Multiple record lamps (front, top, and back) so you always know when you're rolling.
  • B-Model Note: The "B" in ILME-FX30B typically denotes the "Body Only" version (without the XLR top handle).

Ref # ILME_FX2B

The Sony ILME-FX2B is a full-frame addition to Sony’s Cinema Line, designed to bridge the gap between high-end mirrorless hybrids and dedicated cinema cameras.

Released to appeal to solo operators and travel filmmakers, it sits in a unique spot in the lineup—offering a higher resolution sensor than the FX3 but a more compact, viewfinder-equipped body compared to the larger FX6.

What Makes the FX2 Distinct?

  • The Hybrid "Cinema" Body: Unlike the FX3, which is strictly "flat-top" for cage mounting, the FX2 includes a built-in tilting electronic viewfinder (EVF). This makes it much friendlier for handheld outdoor shooting where glare makes the LCD difficult to see.
  • AI-Powered Autofocus: It utilizes the newer AI processing unit found in cameras like the A7R V and A9 III, providing superior subject recognition (humans, animals, birds, insects, cars/trains, and airplanes).
  • 7K Oversampling: Because it uses a 33MP sensor (similar to the A7 IV), it downsamples from 7K to produce extremely sharp 4K footage at standard frame rates.
  • Integrated Cooling: Despite its smaller size, it retains an internal fan and heat-dissipating structure to prevent overheating during long 4K 60p takes.
